Parliament on Thursday suspended sitting temporarily over a deadlock with regards to sanctions to hand out to Assin Central MP, Kennedy Agyapong.

Parliament met today, Thursday, to among other things vote on the appropriate sanctions for Kennedy Agyapong after he was found guilty of contempt of Parliament by the Privileges Committee.

The committee report recommended a reprimand or suspension of Kennedy Agyapong for the rest of the session of Parliament.

The deadlock is because the Majority MPs are divided as to whether the report of the committee should be approved before they decide on what sanctions to prescribe for their colleague.

Parliament will remain suspended until the House can come into an agreement over the sanctions.

The committee’s report said it did not consider expulsion as a punishment for Kennedy Agyapong because he had already apologised for his comments.

According to the report he is guilty of contempt for using words that connote that Parliament is “cheap” and “useless.”

The Minority Chief Whip, Muntaka Mubarak, dragged Kennedy Agyapong before the Privileges Committee over the matter.

Muntaka has another impending case against the Assin Central MP, in which he accused him of inciting violence against the slain Tiger Eye PI investigative journalist, Ahmed Suale.
