Former President John Mahama, has debunked rumours that he promised to give Senior High School students monthly allowances should he return to the presidency.

He said the report is fake “and a figment of the writer’s imagination.”

A satirical blog published a blog post last week that said John Mahama had promised to provide SHS students with monthly allowance as in the case of nursing trainees, and as well supply ‘gari’, a local staple food to them.

Although there are clear indications that the publication is satirical, the post went viral on social media with some mocking the former president over the matter.

James Agyenim-Boateng, who is the Spokesperson for Mahama said such claims were false and John Mahama had not visited the Volta Region as being reported in the publication.

“The report claims that former President John Dramani Mahama spoke to students in the Volta Region on the said subject matter… For the avoidance of doubt, we wish to state that the report is fake and a figment of the writer’s imagination. It is a matter of public knowledge that Mr Mahama has yet to visit the Volta Region to campaign there ahead of the flagbearership election of the National Democratic Congress (NDC). It is also not true that Mr. Mahama has visited the Volta Region to speak to students there,” the statement said

The statement urged Ghanaians to disregard the publication and consider it as a “bizarre, outrageous and ridiculous publication” that does not deserve any recognition.

“It is fake news. For the records, Mr. Mahama is on a five-day campaign tour in the Western Region. Whilst on this campaign, he has been meeting with delegates and supporters of the NDC,” the statement added.

The statement said John Mahama’s key message on previous campaign tours have focused largely on issues affecting cocoa farmers, small scale miners and the high cost of living in the country.

It emphasized that John Mahama’s major commitment in the education sector has been to eliminate the “chaotic” double track system introduced into the secondary education system by the Akufo-Addo government.
