The National Democratic Congress (NDC) says its position against the Electoral Commission(EC)  not to compile a new voters’ register has not changed contrary to what was purported to have been pleaded in court.

The Supreme Court Thursday(June 11, 2020)  offered the NDC two reliefs to choose one, which it opted for the use of the existing voters’ ID card to register in the upcoming voter’s registration exercise.

The Supreme Court will on June 23 , 2020 give a ruling as to whether the EC can accommodate the existing voters’ ID as a requirement for obtaining a new voters’ ID card during the upcoming voters’ registration exercise.

But the National Communications Officer of the opposition NDC said “Our opposition to the EC’s decision to compile a new register has not changed”, he spoke on Joy FM.

“For us that issue of the EC issuing new voters ID cards for the December 7 elections has moved on because in the wisdom of the Justices of the Supreme Court, we needed to elect one of the two reliefs we were praying for.

“We have made that choice; they have adjourned the matter to the 23rd of this month to give their ruling and that is what we are waiting for. We will wait for that ruling and thereafter advise ourselves accordingly. But we are really optimistic that the relief we are praying for will be granted.”

He further said: “The law is in the bosom of the judge, and here we are not just only talking about any judge but we are talking about the Justices of the apex court of the land. They said that you need to elect which one of these two reliefs you are going to rely on and that we are not going to allow the two reliefs to be done.

“What were they expecting us to do, to argue with the justices of the supreme court? At the end of the day we chose to rely on our second relief which relates to the exclusion of the current voter ID cards from  registration identification document to  protect the right to vote of  at least 16 million voters of the existing voters ID Card. 10 million of who stands to be disenfranchised if the existing ID voter card is not included in the list of registration requirement under CI 126.”
